Teacher Training
Gurong Kaakbay Workshop
Gurong Kaakbay is a yearly workshop conducted by the Sa Aklat Sisikat Foundation to empower teachers in their partner public schools to build a nation of readers. In 2006, it was held at Xavier School in San Juan, Metro Manila from October 27-30.
The workshop was attended by 155 educators from the National capital Region, 54 from the Gurong Kaakbay Batch 2005 and 101 new participants for 2006. Thirty-six speakers came to share, inspire, educate, and discuss a variety of topics especially developed for elementary public school teachers.
Overview of Teacher Training Program
Recognizing the role that teachers can take as primary reading advocates
in the classroom, SAS conducts two-day Teacher Training Workshops
to prepare them for the implementation of the Reading Program. Leading
educators facilitate discussions and generate ideas on best practice,
new teaching techniques, creative strategies and reading activities.
It also ensures program sustainability through the years.
The teachers and principals undergo a fun-filled workshop that’s
more than the usual. These workshops are regularly held by SAS Foundation
especially to support the public school educators in their quest
to promote the love and habit of reading. These seminars are designed
to be a time of discovery and learning for all.
Through these workshops, educators are able to access new reading
technology and methods from teacher trainors and reading experts;
they are able to share new ideas, strategies, activities and best
practices; they get the chance to meet some of the Philippines best
and brightest storytellers, authors and illustrators of children’s
storybooks. In addition, teachers can also look forward to DepEd credits,
bonding sessions with fellow teachers and the SAS team, good food
and freebies from sponsors.
