SAS Announces Storybook Collection 2004
Philippine children’s literature is truly alive today! But from the many
books in the market and after a thorough evaluation of hundreds of available locally
published storybooks, SAS is happy to announce the top 75 storybooks that have
made it to the SAS Storybook Collection 2004.
A team of DepEd reading specialists, teachers, psychologists, parents and students
read through hundreds of titles and chose the books based on three main characteristics:
the books exhibit Filipino family values, they have literary merit and are considered
by Grade 4 students to be reader-friendly.
SAS recognizes the importance of delivering reading materials to children
responsibly. We have developed methodologies for evaluating storybooks, and we
place special value on those that emphasize Filipino family values. Each title
in the Storybook Collection must be creative, colorful, fun and engaging for the
Filipino child. And in support of the local children’s book publishing industry,
all books must be written, illustrated and published by Filipinos. In order to
validate our choice of books, we asked 7- to-10-year old students to read and
rate the storybooks. This is to ensure that all the books can be comprehended
by its target readers.
Each Grade 4 section that participates in the SAS Reading Program is gifted
with a set of at least 60 titles from the Storybook Collection. These are what
the students will be reading during the 31-day Read-a-Thon.
