Bright young Segunda has a great thirst fir knowledge. This leads to a lasting friendship with a rich young boy named Felipe, to whom she is both a teacher and student. No formal system of education existed in the Philippines during the 300-year Spanish Occupation. In 1863, a Royal decree was passed providing the establishment of elementary schools for all Filipino children and colleges or secondary schools for men.
