As Anakin Skywalker learns the secrets of the Jedi in order to protect the peace of the Federation, Jollibee works on to fight illiteracy among public school children through its support of the Sa Aklat Sisikat (SAS), a program that aims to promote love for reading.

First developed in 1999 by Museo Pambata, the SAS was established as an independent foundation in 2001. Its aim is to build a nation of readers, especially among public school students.

To help raise funds and sustain the SAS program, Jollibee sought the support of its friends and partners who attended the premiere of “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones” at the Premiere TXH Cinema in Makati City.

Proceeds from the premiere’s donation drive will enable the SAS Foundation to purchase books, set up reading corners and provide training for teachers in selected public schools in the Philippines.

Through the SAS reading program, students in the 4th grade level of selected public schools are given 40 books to read. Students are also given a personal SAS passbook, which serves as their reading journal, enabling the teacher to track his or her progress. Once the participating school has met the requirements of the SAS program, a Tuklas Reading Corner will be constructed for the school’s use.

To read is to know, and just as basic as a child’s right to an education is the right to read. Jollibee hopes that through the SAS program, children will be free from the menace of illiteracy and even poverty.
